Gorgeous Red Aztec Lily Bulbs for Sale | Sprekelia

When this crimson-coated beauty springs into bloom, it's almost as if a character straight out of a Dr. Seuss book emerges to serve you a quizzical expression. The dramatic upper petals curve to form long, inquisitive eyebrows that are the perfect combination of whimsy and charm.

While there may be something puzzling about this plant's appearance, there's no question regarding its garden value. Grown for its showy 6-petal red flowers, Sprekelia is easy to please in sunny borders or containers. Plant where the soil remains fairly dry when dormant from late fall to winter. Enjoy!

Aztec lily

I had previously tried growing this plant in numerous well drained settings: Sun, part shade, well watered, dry. Little success. This year, I planted Sprekelia on a sunny, steep north slope, north facing, well drained, mulched heavily with pine needles, and well watered. Voila!!! Almost immediately after planting shoots appeared. Then the first bloom, then a second!! In July, the plant still has its foliage which continues to grow. Impressed, to say the least. I am awaiting next year to see if it returns in my Zone 5 garden.

Hardy and Exotic

Took a few years to get growing. A few summers ago I had several of these bloom. I had forgotten I planted them and now have have enough to divide. Very exotic flowers. They bloom as shown - close to soil level, but can be seen because of their bright red color. They are very showy in a cluster. The flowers keep well in a vase, which was a very pleasant surprise. Like it hot and not very wet. I live in the Central Valley of California and they have survived freezing temperatures to 20 degrees and some very hot summers.
