Description

Feather Reed Grass 'Overdam' is a stunning variegated ornamental grass that brings architectural elegance and vertical structure to the landscape. A more compact and colorful relative of the famous 'Karl Foerster' variety, 'Overdam' features narrow, arching blades of deep green with crisp, creamy-white margins. In late spring, it sends up slender, upright flower stalks that begin as a shimmering light green and transition into golden-tan plumes by mid-summer. These plumes persist well into winter, providing a steady "exclamation point" of texture and movement in the garden even when other plants have gone dormant.

Quick Facts:

  • Foliage: Striking variegated blades with white vertical stripes; the foliage often takes on a subtle pinkish tint in cool spring weather.

  • Flowers: Feathery, wheat-like plumes that emerge in early summer and remain attractive through winter.

  • Light: Full Sun to Partial Shade (Full sun provides the best upright form).

  • Growth Habit: Strongly upright and clumping; grows 2–3' tall (up to 5' when in bloom) and 18–24" wide.

  • Hardiness: USDA Zones 4–9.

  • Landscape Use: Perfect for narrow spaces, as a vertical accent in mixed borders, or planted in mass for a soft, screening effect.

  • Pro Tip: This is a "cool-season" grass, meaning it starts growing very early in the spring. To keep it looking its best, cut the previous year's growth back to about 3–5 inches from the ground in late winter before the new green shoots appear. It is highly tolerant of heavy clay soils and performs exceptionally well in urban environments.
