I by NO means have a "green thumb" but I try my best to attract and save our butterflies. So, my patio garden is a butterfly garden, or Pollinator's/Milkweed garden. It relaxes me and I love these because there is ZERO effort for these gorgeous plants. The foliage is beautiful, and then the spectacular firework looking blooms that last longer than many of my others. If this is new for you, do not be deterred if it doesn't bloom the first year. One of mine was growing thick, deep, hearty root system and bloomed the following year. I'm in zone 9, I did however this past winter cut my foliage down to the base due to it becoming slimy and I didn't want my giant bulb to rot so it hasn't started growing back yet, but it is early in the year and my bulb and its roots on all 3 are thick, long, and healthy white. I look forward to another great year, and no people the toxity is VERY LOW, do not worry. I have kid's and cats as well as other critters on my patio a lot and none have been sick or even had a rash. The only thing I would suggest to anyone who writes about these is to detail winter guidelines. To trim down when leaves are dead and getting wilted and slimy or just let them naturally fall off and it won't hurt the bulb? I took a chance and trimmed mine down. The bulb and root system looks great so I'm sure it's okay but would have loved to have more detailed instructions beforehand.
I consider this like a strange allium, great bloom but the foliage takes a beating. I couldn't tell if it was pest related, I even checked it on multiple occasions, never found out what keeps eating the cool foliage. All three bulbs did a great job.
Easy to to grow and absolutely beautiful! I will be purchasing many more next season.
I live in San Diego county, zone 10, and water my garden lightly. Based on the previous review, I purchased these bulbs. I planted them with a great amount of home compost under the filtered shade of a palm tree and forgot about them. They just came out at the end of August and have been flowering through September, one at a time. The plants are not very tall, but the flowers are huge: just as big as a Christmas ball or a Tennis ball. They are very unusual and amazing, not the kind of flowers that you would see in every neighbor garden. I will definitely buy more next spring. In a nutshell: show stopper and easy to grow!
Thank you easytogrowbulbs to provide such variety of bulbs!
We purchased this plant from EasyTo GrowBulbs many years ago, and it comes back year after year after year!!! Very striking large red bloom -- a real show stopper. We've had doctors dressed in medical garb crawl on hands and knees through dirt to have their pictures taken with this blooming beast. This plant has been no trouble at all; we literally planted the bulb and forgot it. But no one fails to notice when this Dr. Seuss plant blooms. Our climate is hot and dry, so we planted in filtered sun. We love this Scadoxus so much, we purchased more, and will continue to add.
