Freesia - Double Flower Form
If you live in zones 9-11 count yourself among the lucky. Gardeners in cooler parts of the country covet the intoxicating scent of freesia but can't over winter these tender bulbs outdoors. (They can be grown on bright windowsills, however.)
Years of selective breeding has created freesias with 8-12 flowers per stem and a wide range of clear pastel shades and deep, rich hues. When situated in a sunny, warm site freesias will flower in spring and sometimes again, lightly, in the fall. That's a lot of activity out of these small bulbs.
A bag of 25 freesia bulbs can be planted in about 15 minutes. Seems like a reasonable investment to gain weeks of scented spring flowers, no?
Note: prices below are for freesia 25 bulbs, all in the largest commercially available sizes.
Double freesia bulbs are temporarily out of stock, but should be available shortly. Please check back in late February.
