Erythroniums (Dog Tooth Violets, Trout Lilies)
For informal gardens with a bit of dappled shade, few spring plants are as unassumingly graceful as erythroniums, or trout lilies. Their common name is derived from the speckled or mottled pattern of the fish-shaped leaves. These plants are also known as dog tooth violets or dog tooth lilies because of their decidedly tooth-shaped bulbs.
Producing nodding, lily-like blooms on slender stems in the spring, erythroniums are perfect compliments to woodland gardens where the gray, bronze or mahogany patterns on their foliage herald the approaching season even before the flowers appear. Where happy, they spread into large colonies and form a lovely naturalized ground cover before many other plants hit their early season stride.
Choose the flower color and form that appeals to you and give these a try. We think you'll like them a lot.
Note: Prices below are for packages of 3 or 5 bulbs, depending on variety. All bulbs are in the largest commercially available sizes.
Shipping: Freshly dug erythronium bulbs are shipped from early September through November. These bulbs need to be planted immediately; they do not store well at room temperature out of the ground.
