Eremurus (Foxtail Lilies, Desert Candles)
Native to the dry grasslands and semi-desert regions of central and western Asia, foxtail lilies, or desert candles, as they are also called, are clump forming perennials that sprout from star-fish shaped roots. These plants have foliage that is lance shaped, strongly linear and often spiky.
With hundreds of tiny, perfectly formed flowers packed stems that reach heights of 5 to 6 feet, foxtail lilies are eye catching in the back of the border or when planted in front of dark walls or evergreens. These large flowering spikes develop in the late spring and early summer with individual florets opening from the bottom up and blooming over a period of several weeks.
Foxtail lilies are happiest when allowed to remain in the same spot over time; they take a little while to settle in when moved. Grow these Amazonian beauties in locations that offer some protection from strong winds or stake them to preserve the incredible flower spires.
