Where to Plant

Giant Snowflakes are remarkably easy to grow and flourish in various light conditions, ranging from full sun to partial shade to dappled shade. These beauties are super easy to site and please, requiring little more than well-drained soil, as they will not thrive in soggy soil or standing water. If you notice puddles of water 5–6 hours after a hard rain, scout out another site or amend the soil with organic material to raise the level 2–3 inches.

When to Plant

Plant your Leucojum bulbs in the fall any time before the ground freezes, typically between late September and late November. You can expect roots to form shortly after planting, with leaves and flowers developing in the spring.

How to Plant

  • Find a location where the soil drains well.
  • Dig holes and plant the bulbs 4" deep and 4" apart, with the pointed tops facing upwards.
  • Water thoroughly, soaking the soil to settle it around the bulbs without air pockets.

How to Grow

  • Water as needed during active growth periods, supplying about 1” of moisture per week.
  • Leave the foliage in place after blooming has finished for the season. The leaves will gather sunlight to create food through photosynthesis, strengthening the plant for the future.
  • Remove the dry foliage when the leaves turn yellow and die back around early to mid-summer.
  • Allow your Leucojum plants to rest for a few months before beginning the next growing cycle.

Leucojum Tips & Tricks

  • Plant your Giant Snowflakes in outdoor garden beds and borders rather than containers, as these plants prefer to remain undisturbed.
  • Feel free to snip a few flowers when in bloom for lightly scented spring bouquets, as doing so will not hurt the plants.
  • Encourage the development of small side bulbs for big, blooming clumps by leaving the plants undisturbed.
  • Examine the bulbs to distinguish between the flat bottom and the pointed top, which should be planted facing upwards.
  • Achieve the greatest impact by grouping your Leucojum bulbs together for a lovely patch.
  • Amend the soil with ground bark, decomposed manure, or compost to improve drainage and encourage a healthy start.
