Savvy gardeners learn early on that flowers aren't the only elements that make delicious landscapes appetizing. Unusual foliage and colorful fruits and berries can be tasty ingredients, too. This vine is one that works on so many levels, with graceful, grape-leaf-like foliage splashed with cream and sometimes touches of pink, and unusually autumn berries that span the cool side of the color wheel. Variegated porcelain berry vines are fast and forgiving growers, so branches may be trimmed in the fall for outstanding wreaths, coiled centerpieces (around fat pillar candles) and cascading components in fall arrangements. (We know a fellow who makes a tidy sum each year selling bunches of freshly snipped vines at farmers markets.) Fallen berries sometimes sprout, producing baby vines that may be moved (finally, a cost efficient way to mask that ugly chain link fence) or shared with gardening friends.
