Grow one of the most prized
coffees in the world, right in your own backyard or on a sunny windowsill!
Kona coffee is named after the Hawaiian island (the Big Island) where most of
this coveted variety is grown and is famous for its full-bodied flavor, smoothness
and intoxicating aroma. This part of Hawaii has drier winters and more
moisture in the spring when flower buds are forming, a climate much like that
in warmer parts of the States.
The coffee beans develop over
the summer and are harvested in the fall. Even when not in flower or fruit,
this is an attractive evergreen plant with shiny, oval leaves and full form. Trees
usually begin to produce fruit at two or three years of age.
When you see Starbucks
advertising fruit of the coffee tree - "coffee cherries" - soon,
remember you heard it here first. Grow your own now and get ahead of the curve!
