Originating in Brazil many years ago, the Washington Navel is the most widely planted variety in the state of California, where growers take their citrus trees seriously. Why is this cultivar so popular? Because of the outstanding flavor for both eating out of hand and for juicing, the abundance of large, seedless fruits produced, and the convenience of being able to store ripe oranges on the tree for up to three months without diminished quality. Fragrant waxy white flowers, shiny deep green foliage and large orange fruits make for a beautiful tree container or landscape year round.
