Citrus Calamondin, Standard - New
|
Grown largely for its high ornamental value, the calamondin tree is colorful and fragrant with ripe orange fruits, immature green fruits and scented blossoms produced at the same time and year round. The fruits are small, just under 2 inches across, very aromatic, glossy round and enveloped in a thin, sweetly edible skin. Calamondins, when halved or quartered, are sometimes served with iced tea, grilled seafood or meats, and squeezed like a lemon or lime for a spray of flavorful acid juice. Alone or mixed with kumquats, calamondins are the key ingredient for making an excellent marmalade. This tree exhibits an erect and slender growth habit with dense branching beginning close to the ground. It is ideal for smaller yards and for ornamental potted plants, which may be pruned periodically to maintain a desired size. Additionally, this citrus is moderately drought tolerant because it tends to develop a long tap root. Well suited to outdoor plantings in California, Texas, Florida and all along the Gulf Coast.
